How Store Stock Signals Actually Work (and When to Trust Them)

June 24, 2026 ยท 8 min read

Every stock tracker โ€” ours included โ€” reads the inventory signals retailers expose, and those signals are a system's opinion, not a photo of the shelf. Learning the gap between the two is the whole game.

'In stock' means the retailer's system reports units on hand. Counts lag reality in both directions: freshly delivered freight can show zero for a day, and stolen or misplaced items can show positive for weeks โ€” that's phantom inventory.

'Limited' is the riskiest signal. It often means one or two units, and those units are disproportionately likely to be sitting in a returns bin or backroom rather than on the peg. Never make a special trip on a limited signal alone.

The strongest confirmation any retailer offers is an order-pickup option. If the site lets you place a same-day pickup order, a human is about to physically verify the item exists. That's worth more than any status badge.

Our approach at Squish Stock: we blend retailer signals with time-stamped community reports, and we show you the age of every report. A 2-hour-old in-stock report beats a week-old system status every time. Fresh beats official.
